SA Wineland Innovation Laureates: Creation, Fryer’s Cove, Spice Route

AMONG the destinations in and around the winelands of South Africa honoured at the 2019 Wine & Food Tourism Conference outside Stellenbosch for offering outstanding, memorable tourist experiences, three were presented with trophies in recognition of their innovative approach to exciting and delighting their guests. The judges focused on how the innovation helped to solve a problem or address a need or create new opportunities, what the impact was on the business and on the community, as well as whether it ‘came alive’ for the visitor.

Judging panel and conference convenor: Margie Biggs. Panel chair: Jean-Pierre Rossouw, publisher of Platter’s South African Wine Guide. Panel members: Steve Massey (marketing thought leader), Mac Mabidilala (marketing specialist), Sheryl Ozinsky (co-founder of Oranjezicht City Farm and tourism specialist).

INNOVATION WINNERS

CREATION WINES, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Walker Bay
Wilderness to wine farm. Wines of distinction. An ode to nature. Heavenly setting. Social responsibility. Exhibitions. And what Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin’s outfit is most renowned for are the team’s various food and wine pairings.

FRYER’S COVE, Doringbaai
Forged of the earth, tempered by the sea. The vines are just 500m from the ocean, the winery in what was once a fish factory, at the harbour, next door to a lighthouse, with Atlantic seawater used to chill the fermentation tanks. Jetty Restaurant. Pioneers Wynand Hamman, Jan and Ponk van Zyl, working together with the local community.

SPICE ROUTE DESTINATION, Paarl
A unique collection of farm-owned vendors, tenants and partnerships. A wine farm where visitors can also experience the production of beer, gin, chocolate, jams and preserves, and where they can witness glass and ceramic artists at work. A restaurant that aims to redefine the ‘farm-to-fork’ concept, another that offers ‘detoxing’ pizza. Brainchild of Charles Back.
