Syrah du Monde shines a light on Hartenberg, Bon Courage, Cederberg

THEY SAY they produce the world’s best Shiraz. A bold claim by the Hartenberg producers in Bottelary, Stellenbosch. And at the 2019 edition of Syrah du Monde, France, they were certainly up there with some of the best, their ‘Stork’ flagship placing among the Top 4, and Bon Courage of Robertson also one of the Top 10 – their ‘Pepper Tree’ repeating their performance in 2018. In fact Hartenberg won two gold medals at the competition, and another went to the Cederberg.

There were 309 entries from 25 countries assessed over two days, and the achievement of South African cellars was impressive, considering that the number of gold medals awarded was limited to 15, of which four went to the Cape. There were also six silvers that went the way of SA wineries. The judges favoured what they considered to be good Syrah character and well-balanced oak – wines were marked down if oakiness masked varietal aromas and flavours.
