South Africa’s oldest Semillon rooted deep in the soils of Franschhoek

SOURCED predominantly from one of the oldest vineyards and certainly the oldest Semillon plantings in South Africa, the grapes for Boekenhoutskloof Semillon grow on traditional bush vines that still have their original roots, i.e. contrary to the norm that involves cuttings grafted onto disease- and pest-resistant rootstock. And the roots run deep, conducive to intensely complex, well-structured wines with good ageing potential.

It’s over 20 years since the first vintage of Boekenhoutskloof Semillon back in 1997. The last releases were the 2014 and 2015, a small volume retailing at around R350 a bottle (if you can find it), with the 2016 vintage due for release towards the end of 2018. Sadly, the cellar in Franschhoek is not open for sales to the public, although it is possible to make an appointment to taste some of the beauties from what has long been one of the top producers in the country.

Boekenhoutskloof Semillon

WO Franschhoek: grapes from two blocks of ungrafted bush vines at Eikehof, planted in 1902 and 1942, and one at La Colline, planted in 1936. Spontaneous fermentation in barrels and concrete eggs.
2014 includes 4% Sauvignon Blanc:
Alc 13.2 | R/S 1.9 | TA 5.1 | pH 3
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: nose shows melange of freshly squeezed citrus, pear, orange blossom, lemon curd and honeysuckle; yellow fruit follows through on the palate with richly textured mineral core; hints of vanilla and almonds from French oak; long, dry, nutty and spicy with peach blossom and hints of marzipan on lingering finish.
2015  includes a tiny percentage of Muscat d’Alexandrie.
Alc 13.7 | R/S 1.6 | TA 5 | pH 3.4
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: ripe mandarin orange, nectarine, angelica and peach blossom aromas; mid-palate also shows lime, lemon verbena and lemongrass against backdrop of fresh tangerine, orange peel and preserved lemon flavours; stone fruit character adds complexity; slightly spicy finish with hints of quince and star aniseed.
