Tough going for Cape wine cellars at Spanish edition of Mondial

OH DEAR! Ninety ‘grand golds’ go to wonderful wines from around the world at the 2017 edition of Concours Mondial, but none of them to South Africa – despite the entry of some vintages from Cape cellars that have built up some pretty solid reputations for their Cabernet, Shiraz, Pinotage and various red blends, for example. Nevertheless, 10 gold medals for wineries in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Tulbagh and the Cederberg was fairly impressive …

The competition is a huge undertaking: 9080 wines from 50 countries assessed by 320 judges over three days – up to 50 wines per day assigned to the numerous panel members, including South Africa’s Edo Heyns (wine marketer and columnist), Maryna Strachan (communications manager for export-focussed WOSA) and Winnie Bowman (Cape Wine Master and writer).

This year’s taste-off took place in Spain, and/but perhaps South Africa will fare better next year when it’s the turn of China to host the event, in Beijing …
