Bouchard Finlayson Pinot to the fore again – again with Tête de Cuvée

GOLD at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2016 and now gold at the 2017 Global Pinot Noir Masters judged primarily by Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers for The Drinks Business publication, also in the UK. Bouchard Finlayson’s 2013 Tête de Cuvée is proving to be as popular with the cognoscenti as the 2012 was a couple of years back when awarded a gold medal at the Global Masters and highly recommended in Platter’s SA Wine Guide. It’s the sort of performance one’s come to expect of this flagship from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley outside Hermanus, regularly ranked among the Top 10 in the SA Pinot Noir Classification.

Bouchard Finlayson’s Galpin Peak Pinot Noir has also impressed frequently over the years, both locally and internationally: the 2013 was rated 5 Stars in Platter’s before going on to win gold at the Global Pinot Noir Masters in 2016. And at a fraction of the price: R329pb for the current-release Galpin Peak, versus R892pb for the Tête de Cuvée.

The producer’s tasting notes: “A ‘fruits of the forest wine’ with a deep colour… a firm and bold body, it is complex and demands ageing… Delicious raspberry, quince and blackberry flavours add to the nutty tones offered by the generous compliment of new wood. The finish is tannin-rich but harmonious…”

On the jury at the 2017 Global Pinot Noir Masters: Richard Bampfield MW, Clive Barlow MW, Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW, Matthew Forster MW, José Gonzalez Godoy, Will Heslop, Jonathan Pedley MW, Michael Palij MW, Patrick Schmitt MW and Patricia Stefanowicz MW.
