WITH South Africa’s Cabernet Sauvignon particularly topical in May, following Winemag’s annual review of the category for their Prescient Report, it seemed a good time to circulate an update of the prices being charged for the country’s leading examples – the Top 20 Cabs according to the SA Wine Classification.

Cellar-door prices are those posted by the producers and the market survey involved research of the following merchants: Bottleshop, Caroline’s, Cyber Cellar, Getwine, La Cotte, Makro, Norman Goodfellows, Port2Port, SaleWine, Takealot, Wine.co.za and Wine Cellar. Cyber Cellar shone in terms of offering most (17) of South Africa’s Top 20 Cabs, with six of them at prices lower than at any of the other wine shops surveyed and, in total, nine at prices lower than those at the wineries.

Published below are the cellar-door prices per bottle and the lowest of the prices offered at the stores where these wines are on sale. Many of the retailers don’t include vintages on their pricelists and delivery fees vary considerably. Full results of the survey available on request.
