New Constantia bistro and deli promising – but it’s early days still

YAY! AND YET! It was great to hear that there are a couple of new venues to choose from come lunchtime in the winelands of Constantia. Not so great was to discover that at one of them they don’t sell any wine to accompany your meal, and at the other the management is somewhat cheeky… At the Nest Deli on Constantia Uitsig they ask that you to bring your own white or red until they get their licence. Whereas The Bistro @ Klein Constantia are already expecting crowds to be banging on their door: two lunchtime seatings entail being asked to vacate your table at 2 or 2.30pm so as to squeeze in another round of orders before the kitchen closes at 3, and be prepared for a 12% gratuity added on to your bill as a matter of course.

The Nest has a paddock out front and a view of the Constantiaberg mountains. The proprietors are engaging, offering a warm, friendly service and ‘honest to goodness food’ with a varied menu at reasonable prices in a space that’s part of an avenue of shops. Market ambience. No reservations.

The Bistro @ Klein Constantia is next to the renovated wine tasting room. The menu is enticing. The winelist includes a selection from the estate and extends to several vintages of the famous Vin de Constance Natural Sweet that can be paired with various cheeses. Booking recommended, and if you arrive late they might well give your table to somebody else!
