PC and KC among Best Wines on Show at Decanter Awards, London

RECEIVING 17 200 entries for the 2017 edition, the World Wine Awards convened by Decanter magazine (UK) is the largest wine competition on the planet. Special kudos to Paul Cluver of Elgin and Klein Constantia as the only South African wineries to get through the final round of judging when, of the 209 platinum award winners, 34 were chosen as the ‘Best in Show’. South Africa’s ‘super heroes’ on this occasion: Seven Flags Chardonnay 2016 and Vin de Constance 2013.

After a week of deliberation, France was the most successful wine-producing nation with eight of the country’s beauties regarded among the Best in Show. Then followed Argentina, Australia, Italy and Spain, each fielding three of the very top-scoring wines.

Almost as highly rated as the platinum winners were 455 gold medallists, 18 of which are South African (see below). And then you’re looking at 3340 silvers of which 183 went to SA wines, 7038 bronze medal winners and 3651 ‘commended’ wines.

The 219 judges included 65 Masters of Wine and 20 Master Sommeliers. Steven Spurrier was chairman emeritus and the judges who chose the Best in Show from the platinum award winners were: Sarah Jane Evans MW, Gérard Basset MW MS, Michael Hill Smith MW, Andrew Jefford and Andy Howard MW. There were 11 regional chairs, including South Africa’s Fiona McDonald.
