Vergelegen hard to beat when it comes to Cape wine route destinations

SAO BENTO da Vitoria Monastery in Oporto, Portugal, was the venue for the 2016 Great Wine Capitals Global Networks’ Best of Wine Tourism Awards, the culmination of a competition entered by 359 wine estates from South Australia, Rioja in Spain, Bordeaux in France, the Cape winelands, Rheinhessen in Germany, Mendoza in Argentina, Porto in Portugal, Napa Valley in the USA and Casablanca Valley in Chile. Of the 59 award winners to be showcased and advertised online and in various publications in 2017, six are South African, some of whom have also won on two or more occasions since the awards were first presented in 2013, published in 2014.

All of the winning wineries were judged to have distinguished themselves in terms of the excellence of their facilities in various categories and delivering quality experiences to the public in their parts of the world. The South African judges were: restaurant critic and publisher of Platter’s SA Wine Guide JP Rossouw (restaurant category); tour and event specialist Margi Biggs (service category); hospitality industry veteren Philip Engelen (accommodation category); architects Alex Robertson and Johan van Papendorp (buildings and gardens/landscapes category); writer, curator, historian and lecturer Marilyn Martin (arts and culture category); writer, photographer, artist and wine critic Samarie Smith (innovation category); nature conservationist Joan Isham (sustainability category).
