FINDING good wine on sale for less than R50 a bottle has become a big ask, and not only in terms of reds. It might be so that there’s far less rubbish being made these days, but at under R50 there’s plenty of plonk, pedestrian and boring stuff as well as simple fruity drinks that are more like cooldrinks than products of the vine. R100 a bottle has become a new price threshold in South Africa – wines below this level and which promise enjoyment and some interest value are what many of us want to stock up on for anytime enjoyment in between those special occasions.

The wines recommended below have all been highly rated by one or more of the top panels in or outside South Africa during the past 18 months – all priced at below R100 per bottle/750ml at the cellar door or as regards approximate retail prices if unavailable from the producers. Vintages of highly rated wines at under R100 pb from January 2014 to July 2015 that were known to be sold out at the time of writing have been omitted from this listing.
