Delicious desserts and fantastic value-for-money! Badsberg among South Africa’s most consistently good Muscadels

THERE ARE THOSE that can be too spirity, over the top, but the leading examples are quite wonderful among the dessert wine offerings of the Cape. At their best, the fortified red and white Muscadels and Jerepigos made from Muscat grape varieties – typically d’Alexandrie or de Frontignan – show complexity and alluring sweetness without being cloying. And generally speaking, they’re difficult to beat when it comes to value-for-money – world-class at around R50 a bottle (750ml) or less!

Recently announced were the results of South Africa’s 2014 Muskadel SA Awards in which top spot went to Badsberg of the Breedekloof, north-west of Rawsonville, with their 2013 Red Muscadel. Also awarded gold medals were Bon Courage Red Muscadel 2013 (Robertson), KWV White Muscadel Jerepigo 1968 (Paarl), the 2013 Nuy Red and White Muscadels (Worcester), and the Orange River Cellars Red Muscadel 2013 (Northern Cape).

There were 24 entries in the latest Muskadel SA shoot-out – these from 20 or so of the country’s ±60 reputable fortified wine producers situated throughout the Cape winelands but mainly located in the Breede River Valley – Breedekloof (Goudini, Rawsonville, Slanghoek), Worcester, Robertson, McGregor, Bonnievale, Montagu – as well as in the Klein Karoo wine-producing areas of Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn.
