10 of South Africa’s top Rieslings on show at Hartenberg

SOME OF THE big names will be missing at Hartenberg’s ‘Riesling Rocks’ festival this Saturday afternoon (9 Feb), but hey, you can be sure of a great day… Delectable snacking and sipping on the lawns of the estate off the Bottelary Road (M23) in Stellenbosch – an opportunity to explore Riesling’s reputation as a particularly versatile variety when it comes to food and wine pairing and a social event of note.

The “créme de la créme” of South Africa’s Riesling producers were asked to show off their finest examples of the variety, and while Jordan, Paul Cluver, Altydgedacht, Villiera and certain others turned down their invitation or didn’t get one, cellars that will be represented at the party include De Wetshof, Deetlefs, Groote Post, Howard Booysen, Klein Constantia, Nederburg, Nitida, Ross Gower, Spioenkop and Thelema – in addition to Hartenberg, of course.
The entrance fee of R180 entitles you to a wine glass and tastings of the various styles of Riesling ranging from dry to sweet while sampling a range of deli foods and other dishes in the search for perfect partners – think prawns, chorizo and rollmops, plus pâtés, terrines, duck and roast pork, as well as tarts, puddings and cheese… Also, you’ll be able to buy wines and some of the foods at the festival to take home with you when you leave!
