Wine retailing in Cape Town just got a whole lot better

NORMAN GOODFELLOWS is unrivalled as a purveyor of top quality and good value wines in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and the opening of two stores in Cape Town is great news for residents and tourists on the doorstep to the winelands of the Western Cape. No doubt Caroline’s Fine Wine Cellar, Wine Concepts and others who specialise in retailing the liquid pleasures of Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Walker Bay and the Swartland et al in the ‘mother city’ will be a bit twitchy about the arrival of a serious competitor on their turf at Three Anchor Bay near the V&A Waterfront as well as in Kloof Street, Gardens. But it’s a challenge to all existing wine shops to up their game to the benefit of those with a taste for good living and the finer things in life.
The delightful NGF director and wine connoisseur Carrie Adams was a little cagey about what’s gone down, conceding that it involved a deal with the owners of Steven Rom Liquors but advising that any detailed announcements would be premature. Meanwhile the group’s website is flighting contact details of the new stores and wine lovers can look forward to the shopping experience with high expectations.

“Expect More…” is their pitch. “Not content with being just another bottle store… providing our discerning clientele with the finest wine, spirits, malts, soft drinks, party services and gifts… extraordinary service levels, attention to detail and personal interaction…” And we can’t wait to put their door-to-door deliveries to the test, too!
