Cap Classique bubblies giving the French sleepless nights
IF YOU’RE planning a sparkling occasion with folk who appreciate the finer things in life and want to make sure they enjoy the bubbly you’re serving, well… According to some of the best wine critics locally and in the UK, the following vintage Cap Classiques will do very nicely thank you – and in most instances for less than a third of the price charged for big-name Champagnes a la France:
Boschendal Grande Cuvee Brut 2007 from Franschhoek – last year a rating of 4½ Stars in Wine magazine (SA) and a double gold medal at the Veritas Awards (SA); this year a trophy at the Classic Wine Trophy competition (SA) and victory in the Top 100 SA Wine Challenge. R105 a bottle ex-cellar for the 2007 which is selling out fast and about to make way on shelf for the 2008 – a ‘fresher and livelier’ wine according to winemaker Lizelle Gerber.
Desiderius Pongracz 2003 from JC le Roux/Distell, Stellenbosch – last year a silver medal at the Trophy Wine Show (SA), a 4 Star rating in Wine magazine (SA) and a gold medal at the Veritas Awards (SA), this year silver medals at the International Wine Challenge (UK) and again at the Trophy Wine Show (SA). R255 a bottle ex-cellar.
