Beautiful lunch venue in the Helderberg, Stellenbosch

GUARDIAN PEAK, the sister winery of Rust en Vrede just around the corner, is a  favourite lunch-time destination in the Cape winelands. It’s one of those cellars with a restaurant that you want to linger at all afternoon, taking in the views and enjoying a menu tailored around the wines that include a Sauvignon Blanc available nowhere else and reds ranging from good value-for-money bottlings to premium, special occasion stuff.

Food and wine pairing is one of the features of the place. Another is that besides the Guardian Peak offerings, it’s also the home of Cirrus Syrah and Stellenbosch Ridge – the former having won a string of awards during the past year, and the latter a new blend from winemaker Coenie Snyman and proprietor Jean Engelbrecht that has connoisseurs sitting up and taking note.

It’s a bummer that the kitchen shuts at 3pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and that it doesn’t open at all on Sundays – the venue just ain’t as enjoyable without sitting down for a nibble at least, and there’s a 15% discount on the wine prices that you only qualify for after you’ve ordered a meal.
